THE STORY
Surviving The Hood is an original musical crafted by the dynamic brother-sister duo, This unique production merges elements reminiscent of The Wire and West Side Story, delivering a cinematic, music-infused stage experience that delves into the complex interplay of violence, culture, love, and choice in contemporary urban America.
This compelling narrative, penned by seasoned writer and actress Alicia Heyward, and all music composed by NYC public school educator and entertainment veteran Damen Heyward, draws from first hand experiences with students impacted by gun violence, gang culture, incarceration, and substance abuse. The plot centers on a responsible young man who is torn between loyalty to his friends in a violent gang and his growing love for a girl who represents hope for tomorrow. Surviving The Hood sheds light on the effects of violence that ripple through families, schools, friendships, and entire communities.
At its heart it poses a critical question:
Will he remain loyal to the streets or embrace love and the hope for a brighter future?

Chase is an NYU Tisch graduate with a BFA in Drama. She's also a classically and contemporary trained vocalist. Her stage credits include lead roles as Mariah in "Lost Faith" and Genesis in "For Junior." Get ready to watch her bring this unforgettable character Dawn to life!

Micah Wong, a Brooklyn-born singer, songwriter, producer, dancer, and actor, is a former Apollo Theater semifinalist. His new single, "OH LAWDD," is available on all music platforms. His upcoming debut album features Hip-hop and R&B.

Damen Heyward
Producer, director, songwriter, composer, musician, educator, and performer with a career spanning R&B, ministry, and education. Formerly with 4 By Four and Force MDs, Damen has collaborated with Nicki Minaj and Joe, mentored incarcerated youth at Rikers Island, and now uses music in NYC public schools to shift mindsets and open pathways to purpose. Not only is Damen the Director of Surviving The Hood, but he is also the sole writer, producer, and composer of each song in the musical.

Alicia Heyward
Alicia Heyward is a certified televison producer and former actress with extensive theatre experience. She created and produced the series "Reality Chek," a show that aired across several public access networks, including BronxNet, Bklyn Free Speech, and MNN.
Through an auspicous beginning and collaboration with her brother Damen and show director Alan Carlton, they received a New York Emmy Award nomination in the B-Creative category through Bklyn Free Speech.

Dr. Norman “Sobie” McGill is a dedicated activist and community leader from Highbridge, Bronx, whose skills foster youth engagement, entertainment, and creative expression. As President of the Highbridge United Block Association and founder of S.P.A.R.E. A LIFE (Supporting People Around Risk Environments), he empowers young people to share their stories and develop their talents.
Through various programs, Sobie nurtures confidence and collaboration among youth, using creative platforms to promote personal growth and community involvement. His mission is to enhance the lives of young individuals, inspiring them to become confident leaders and change-makers in their communities.
